Season 17: Ragnarok

It's been a few months and now it's time for the 17th season of Azalea City Fantasy Wrestling. This season's theme is "Ragnarok" because of a suggestion from Tess and because Vikings are awesome. As always, I'd like to thank everyone who will be playing in this upcoming season and I hope everyone has a lot of fun. This is the first time we've ever managed to have back to back seasons with the exact same people in the league and we're hoping Season 17 is just as good as Season 16 was.

Let's talk about rule changes first. There's not many this time, so I'm just going to list them:

  • The definition of a hardcore match has been changed to this: "To count as a hardcore match, a match must be no disqualification AND include an additional stipulation. Matches that are simply no disqualification matches with a different name do not count (such as a street fight or an extreme rules match). Some examples of a hardcore match include falls count anywhere matches, cage matches, and ladder matches." This is essentially the exact same as the previous rule but I changed it to make it clearer what matches count and what matches don't.

  • The finisher rule has been changed as well: "A wrestler's finishing move. In order to score points, they must use either their own finisher or their opponent's finisher against them. Any move the wrestler uses at least somewhat regularly to actually win a match can count as a finisher. For example, Kevin Owens' powerbomb and his stunner both qualify as finishers. When scoring, the goal will be to award the most amount of reasonable points. So, for Kevin Owens, I'll award points for whichever move he uses most often in that match. What moves count as finishers can change during the season, so if you feel like a move should or shouldn't count, feel free to mention it and it will be reviewed. Tag team finishers count for wrestlers in a tag team. Two wrestlers performing a double team move can count as a finisher if the move would qualify as a finisher for one or both of them if performed normally. ***The move used to win a match will always score a finisher point even if it's not normally a finisher. Heel tactics and roll-up pins never count as finishers.*** " This change was made to make the rule easier to understand and also to simplify things for me when scoring. It's a little more open than it used to be, so there might be a slight increase in the number of awarded finishers this season.

  • Finally, I added "both the attacker and the attack target must not be in a match." to Attacks and Weapon Attacks. So, wrestlers will no longer score points for attacking people at ringside during a match that they are in.

As for team change rules, the only change is this:

  • "If a player attempts to pick up a wrestler who is inactive, that wrestler will be placed on the waiver wire." This change is being made because of wrestlers like Edge who was rumored to return and online sources confirmed it before he actually returned. The goal of the waiver wire is to balance who can get certain wrestlers and reading about a return online, then picking up the wrestler before they actually go on waivers was a method that allowed people to bypass this system, giving them a slight advantage. Of course, if you draft an inactive wrestler, you can have them without worrying about this rule.

All of these changes have been highlighted on the League and Rules page.

The format for this season will be different. We are once again splitting the league into two divisions which will be called clans. The first clan will include Madelyn, Ben, Jacob, and Jeff. The second clan will include Terry, Austin, Phillip, and Chris. Players in each clan can decide the name of their clan. This is mostly used for scheduling. You will play all teams in your clan twice each (weeks 1-3 and 8-10) and all teams from the opposite clan once each (weeks 4-7).

At the end of the season, the top 2 teams from each clan will qualify for the playoffs. No team will be awarded an automatic bye week to the championship game. Instead, the first week of the playoffs will feature a match between the top 2 teams that have qualified for the playoffs regardless of what clan they're in (so both these teams could be in the same clan). The winner will earn the bye week while the loser will have to compete in the actual playoff match in week 2 of the playoffs, which is a triple threat match. Let's take a look at an example:

Example Final Standings:

  1. Madelyn (32)

  2. Ben (26)

  3. Jacob (22)

  4. Jeff (13)

  1. Terry (31)

  2. Austin (24)

  3. Phillip (21)

  4. Chris (15)

In this example, the top 2 in each clan are Madelyn, Ben, Terry, and Austin (the numbers next to them are victory points). So, those 4 teams qualify. Madelyn and Terry would have the most victory points, so:

Playoff Week 1: Madelyn vs Terry (If Ben had 31 and Terry had 26, this game would be Madelyn vs Ben)

Playoff Week 2: Austin vs Ben vs Loser of Week 1

Championship Game: Winner of Week 1 vs Winner of Week 2

This system is designed to give the top 2 teams essentially 2 chances to earn a spot in the championship game (since they'd have to lose both weeks to get eliminated). That way, everyone has to earn their way in but the higher ranked teams still get some kind of advantage. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask.

Everyone plays against everyone else at every PPV this season. The total points for all PPV events will be kept track of separately (they still count for regular standings also) from other points to create a PPV ranking of all 8 teams (clans don't matter for this). Then, after the final PPV of the season, you'll score additional victory points based on your PPV ranking. The points awarded are:

  1. 12

  2. 10

  3. 9

  4. 8

  5. 6

  6. 4

  7. 2

  8. 0

Put in simpler terms, if you score the most PPV points in the league, then you get 12 extra victory points at the end of the season. This may seem huge but each individual PPV could score you 4 victory points last season, so mathematically, it works out to be the same ratio. I changed the PPV scoring to this to allow people to pick and choose whether they want to focus on NXT or main roster and to lower the penalty for teams if they are unable to start a full team at a show. It also lowers the amount of luck involved with facing individual opponents at PPV events.

For this season, all PPV events between May 16th and August 1st will be scored.

The draft order will be determined randomly except for Austin getting the 1st pick (for winning the predictions mini game last season) and Ben getting to choose his spot (for winning the Road to Wrestlemania mini game). But Season 18 will be a little different as I'm introducing a draft lottery. Throughout the next few months, players can earn draft numbers from various things such as mini games. The more numbers you earn, the higher your chances. When it comes time to determine the Season 18 draft order, I'll draw numbers at random. Whenever one of your numbers gets called, you get to pick your spot in the draft order. Here are some ways to earn draft numbers:

  1. Predictions: The winner of the predictions mini game each week earns 2 numbers. If there is a tie between 2 people, they split it. Tie between more than 2 people and it gets pushed to the next week.

  2. Playing the game: Everyone gets 1 number just for playing.

  3. Preseason game: The winning team in the preseason get 1 number each. (see below)

  4. Consolation bracket: During the playoff weeks, the teams that didn't make it to the playoffs will still be playing. In week 1, the teams will be seeded according to most victory points (regardless of division). In week 2, the winners and losers will play against each other. Each game awards 3 numbers to the winner

Season 17 will have a one week preseason beginning with the May 10th episode of Raw. This preseason game will be both clans facing each other in a big tag team match. The clan with the highest combined score for the week earn 1 draft number each.

Following that, the season will officially begin with the Wrestlemania Backlash PPV on May 16th. The full schedule for the season will be revealed at a later date but here are the games for week 1 (beginning May 17th):

Austin vs Terry

Phillip vs Chris

Ben vs Jacob

Jeff vs Madelyn
