It's been a while since we've had a recap or preview post on this blog. So this post will be a recap of the season up to this point and a preview of week 6. Weekly previews are set to return and I'm hoping to have them published each Monday before that week's games start.
Of course, we all can see the standings and it seems clear that some teams have a much higher chance of reaching the playoffs than others. But with 5 more weeks and at least 1 PPV left, it's still anyone's game. Every victory point counts. And, even if your team isn't able to reach the championship game, there are still consolation games to be played during the postseason. Each of those games award 3 draft numbers to the winner, which is huge. More draft numbers means a higher chance of a good position in next season's draft.
Current draft numbers:
Austin (5)
Phillip and Ben (4)
Chris (3)
Everyone else (1)
So far this season, Ben has dominated. He's scored the maximum possible number of victory points in every weekly game he's played and currently has the second most PPV points. That doesn't necessarily mean that he's already won the season though, so there's no reason for anyone to give up quite yet. History is filled with amazing comeback victories (Terry in Season 10, Austin in Season 11, and Austin in Season 12 just to name a few).
Now, let's take a look at this week's games...
Austin vs Chris vs Jacob
Our game of the week this week is an interesting mix of teams. We have Chris, who seems to be getting more consistent, but will Lashley or McIntyre score high right after a PPV main event? His opponents are Jacob, who is in need of a rebuild, and Austin, who has been the most inconsistent team.
Jacob has 3 really good wrestlers on his team, so he could potentially win this one if he picks up the right people to match those 3. Austin started the season with back to back high scoring weeks, then had his bye week, and now has had back to back low scoring weeks. Chris needs his team to have a normal week for him to win this one.
Will Jacob find a way to rebuild and win? Will Austin's team resemble weeks 1 and 2 or weeks 4 and 5? Will Chris score 35 or 17? Chris is a 8-point favorite to win and our simulator gives him a 71% chance to win. Who will win this triple threat match?
Madelyn vs Phillip
With Ben and Jeff on bye weeks, both games this week are huge opportunities for people to catch up in the standings. One of these two teams is going to suddenly look a lot more promising with a win. The other is going to have a difficult route back to the top.
Phillip's first half of the season has been better than last season but he's once again going to need a comeback in the second half to reach the playoffs. Madelyn, on the other hand, has had a big drop off from last season and is looking to rebound in the second half. This is a huge game for both of these teams but only one of them can win.
Phillip is a 6-point favorite and has a 61% chance to win, so this is expected to be a close match.
With the predictions poll giving out draft numbers and the upcoming consolation games, everyone still has something to play for even if they don't reach the playoffs. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed Season 17 so far and we're looking forward to an exciting second half of the season! Good luck to everyone!
