Week 1 Preview

Season 16 starts today! Teams have been drafted, the rules have been set, the schedule has been revealed. All that's left is to actually start playing the game. First, I'd like to go over a few quick reminders for everyone to try and avoid confusion.

There have been some rule changes. On the Rules page, the changes from last season are in bold. However, some of you may not have played the last season or two or three or five, so for those players, I recommend reading the entire Rules page. If anything doesn't make sense, please contact me. As for team changes, those rules are also different. Especially the waiver wire. These rules can be found in the forum and at the bottom of the League page. Again, please contact me if there are any questions.

The full schedule for Season 16 can be found in the pinned blog post. Each week, you will get a victory point if you win your head to head game AND a victory point if you are one of the top 4 scoring teams for that week. Victory points determine standings. Teams and current standings can be found on the League page.

Finally, let me remind everyone to submit their predictions for the week 1 games. The poll is at the bottom of the Home page. You get 1 point for each correct prediction along with 1 bonus point if you correctly predict the game of the week. Most points by the end of the season gets first draft pick for Season 17. Good luck!

Now, let's preview the first week of the season. We have 4 interesting matches to kick things off, starting with Jacob vs Jeff. Jacob is coming off a loss in the Season 15 championship game and is looking to win the championship this time around. With an all star team that includes Drew Mcintyre, Keith Lee, and Big E, it seems he has all the weapons he needs to compete this season.

Jeff is returning to the league after missing Season 15. He last competed for the championship in Season 12 and last won the championship in Season 9. As a two-time champion, you can never count him out. Especially with first round pick Seth Rollins leading the team. Rollins has consistently been one of the best draft picks in previous seasons and contributed heavily to the championship in at least two seasons. This game is also one of the two Fetner vs Cagle opening week games. Which group will make a statement to open Season 16?

In our second Fetner vs Cagle game, Madelyn takes on Terry. Madelyn is playing her 4th season, having reached the playoffs in Season 14. But, she's facing one of the best to ever play the game to start this season. Terry last played in Season 13, battling all the way to a 76-76 tie in the championship game. Prior to that, he won the Season 2 and Season 10 championship, reached the championship game in Season 6 and Season 11, and has one of the best postseason records of anyone in the league.

But, beating teams that are historically excellent is something Madelyn has done quite well in her first few seasons. With Kofi Kingston, Sasha Banks, and Kevin Owens, she certainly seems to have a team good enough to win. Will either the Fetner Foundation or the Cagle Corporation win both of these games? Or will they split the two games?

Ben, a three-time champion, opens his season against a newcomer to the game. Phillip is a big wrestling fan but has never played fantasy wrestling before. Based on the draft, he seems to know what he's doing, building a team that includes Bray Wyatt, Aleister Black, and Rhea Ripley. However, Ben has finished ranked #1 in 4 of the last 5 seasons (winning 1 championship along the way). He has essentially proven himself the regular season champion.

This game is essentially the ACFW version of Keith Lee vs Randy Orton, or Kevin Owens vs John Cena. It's the new guy vs the former champion. Will there be an upset? Or will Ben continue his streak of regular season victories?

Finally, in the game of the week, we have Season 15 Champion Austin vs Brandon, who is returning from a 5 season hiatus. This will be the only game this week that matches two former champions against each other. Brandon's team includes Randy Orton, Braun Strowman, and Jey Uso. Austin's team includes Roman Reigns, Bayley, and Dominik Mysterio. Between the two of them, they have won 6 of the 15 ACFW championship games.

The real questions are will we see the Brandon of Season 3 and 4, who won most of his games by a huge amount or will we see the Brandon of Season 9 and 10, who couldn't quite get together a strong team? And can Austin maintain his current run? He's won 3 of the last 5 seasons but before that, he only managed to win 1 out of 10 seasons. Plus, Austin has shown a tendency to be inconsistent in the early weeks of seasons even with a strong team. For example, in Season 11, he only scored 6 points in week 1, then 24 in week 2. In Season 12, he scored 34 week 1, then 24 in week 2, then 8 in week 3.

"I'm more confident in this team than I have been about any of my previous teams. I fully expect to win my 4th championship in 6 seasons and this game is simply the first obstacle my team will overcome on their way to a title." - Austin

Who will win this clash of champions? Season 16 starts tonight!
