Week 1 Recap

Austin: 38 beat Brandon: 16.5

- The game of the week came down to the last match on Smackdown with Roman Reigns defending the Universal Championship against Braun Strowman. Going into Smackdown, Brandon held a 6.5-0 lead. However, Austin's team captain, Reigns, made the score 15.5-14.5 in Austin's favor shortly after the match began. A disqualification ending may have changed the outcome but a clean win in a main championship match moved the score heavily towards an Austin victory. The final score doesn't quite show how close this one actually was. As it stands, the defending champion is off to a good start.

Ben: 55 beat Phillip: 24.5

- The rookie put up a good fight on Raw and added some more points on NXT, but Ben's record breaking performance couldn't be stopped. 55 points tied the previous modern record for most points scored in the modern era without boosts (which were exclusive to Season 14). Xavier Woods, as Ben's captain, scored 30 points by himself as The New Day wrestled twice. Ben is certainly off to a strong start in what could end up being another #1 ranking at the end of the regular season. But, the newcomer did manage to score the 5th highest point total for the week, so perhaps he'll rebound in the coming weeks.

Jeff: 33 beat Jacob: 18.5

- Jeff's return to ACFW went about as well as he probably hoped for with a one sided victory over a strong opposing team. This one looked like it was going to be really close until Lars Sullivan lead Jeff's team to an impressive showing on Smackdown to run away with this game. Still, Jacob's team looks promising with Big E's push and Mcintyre currently holding the WWE Championship.

Madelyn: 63 beat Terry: 19

- Madelyn put together a record breaking performance, scoring the most points in a single week in any season without boosts and the second highest points even with boosts. Not enough can be said for how amazing this was for her team. It launched her to #1 in the week 1 standings and made her one of the clear favorites to reach the playoffs. But, can she continue at this level without The New Day being on both Raw and Smackdown? Only time can tell.

The story for week 1 was huge numbers for the winning teams and large margins of victory. The average margin of victory was a massive 27.5 points. No final score was closer than 14 points and the 4 winners also had the 4 highest point totals, meaning all 4 winners got 2 victory points each. And all 4 other teams got 0. But, the first week is usually not a good indicator of future success based on previous seasons. And there are still plenty of decent wrestlers that are free agents. Perhaps next week, we'll see if any teams manage to improve and fight their way into the top ranks of the standings. Still 10 weeks to go and 3 more pay-per-views, so it's definitely anyone's game.
