For the first time this season, the game of the week does not involve any top 3 teams. However, this week still matters. As far as standings go, we have #1 vs #7, #2 vs #8, #3 vs #6, and #4 vs #5. All of these games are a chance for the higher ranked teams to pull away even more, but also a chance for some lower ranked teams to fight their way up the ladder.
Here are the current points for the predictions mini game:
1) Austin: 15
2) Phillip: 10
2) Ben: 10
4) Terry: 9
4) Jeff: 9
6) Madelyn: 6
7) Chris: 2
- In week 3, Austin and Phillip predicted every game correctly. In week 4, Terry predicted every game correctly.
Now, lets have a look at week 5...
Terry faces Phillip in a #2 vs #8 match. A win here could potentially put Terry in the running for the #1 spot and would continue his undefeated streak outside of week 1 (his only loss). Phillip is looking to win his second game this season. As we near the halfway point of the season, all victory points start to get more important. Terry has a 85% chance to win this one as a 10-point favorite.
Next, we have Madelyn vs Jeff. According to the simulator, this is the most one-sided match so far this season. Madelyn has a 96% chance to win as a record 26-point favorite. But, she was a 21-point favorite last week and nearly lost. And Jeff's team has scored big numbers in the past. Can he cover the spread? And more importantly, can he win and put an end to Madelyn's hopes of an undefeated season? She's won her last two games by a combined 2.5 points. Is her luck coming to an end this week?
After losing back to back games of the week, Austin is now in a non-game of the week for the first time this season. And he's scheduled to face Jacob, who is coming off back to back big wins. With things for Jacob trending up, and Austin's scores trending down, could this be a turning point for both teams? Our simulator thinks Austin has the advantage, giving him a 73% chance to win as a 5-point favorite. But, Austin lost last week as a 7-point favorite. Will Austin lose three in a row?
Our game of the week this week is a rivalry that started back at the Season 1 championship game. Ben won that game by a final score of 64-61. Chris seems to have brought new life to the dying team he took over, scoring 26.5 more points last week than the team did in any prior week. Still, he dropped one spot in the rankings to #5. The only thing separating these two teams in the rankings is 8.5 total points. The winner here is essentially guaranteed to be in the top 4 at the end of the week. The simulator gives Ben a 71% chance to win as a 10-point favorite.
When asked about the match, Chris said, "Good opponent, and he certainly has had my number in the past few years, but I'm certain I have him figured out. And if I don't, at least I still have my hair."
Ben had this to say... "Chris, you should have just stayed away. I'm not sure if you have this egocentric bias of remembering your experience was better in the past than it truly was, but I broke you once before. I will break you again!"
Who will win this time? Week 5 starts tonight!
